5 Ways to Stay Fit This Summer in Bermuda

Hello Bermuda! As we gear up for another summer filled with sunshine and outdoor adventures, it’s time to get ready to embrace the beauty of our island while staying fit and healthy.

With over 15 years training various individuals of all levels as an avid outdoors person myself, I am excited to share with you five fantastic ways to stay fit this summer.

  1. Paddle Boarding: Let’s kick things off with a splash! Paddle boarding is not only a great workout for your core and upper body but also a fantastic way to explore Bermuda’s stunning coastline. Glide through crystal-clear waters, soak in the sunshine, and challenge your balance as you paddle your way to fitness paradise.
  2. Swimming: Dive into the refreshing waters surrounding our island and make a splash with swimming. Whether you prefer the calm waters of our beaches or the exhilarating currents of the ocean, swimming offers a full-body workout while keeping you cool under the sun. Plus, it’s a low-impact exercise suitable for all ages and fitness levels. As a matter of fact, swimming burns more calories than most other exercises or movements.
  3. Trail Walking: One of my all time favourites, Lace up your sneakers and hit the trails! Bermuda is blessed with a network of scenic walking trails that meander through lush greens, along breathtaking cliffs, and past historic landmarks. Take in the sights, breathe in the fresh air, and feel your stress melt away as you immerse yourself in nature while getting your steps in.
  4. Beach Volleyball: Gather your friends and family for some fun in the sun with beach volleyball. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a novice, beach volleyball is a fantastic way to boost your cardiovascular fitness, improve agility, and unleash your competitive spirit. Soak up the energy of the sand, surf, and sun as you spike, set, and serve your way to fitness glory.
  5. Lighthouse Walking: Explore Bermuda’s maritime history while getting your steps in with a lighthouse walk. From Gibbs Hill Lighthouse to St. David’s Lighthouse, our island is dotted with iconic beacons that offer panoramic views and captivating stories. Trek up the stairs, feel the breeze on your face, and reward yourself with breathtaking vistas at the top.

Bonus Activity: Fishing: Cast your worries away and reel in some fun with fishing. Whether you’re angling from shore or heading out to sea, fishing is a relaxing way to connect with nature while working your muscles. Enjoy the thrill of the catch, savor the tranquility of the ocean, and unwind amidst Bermuda’s natural beauty.

Now that we’ve covered some exhilarating outdoor activities to keep you moving this summer, let’s talk about the importance of  staying safe and healthy under the sun. As temperatures rise, it’s crucial to prioritize hydration, replenish electrolytes, and protect your skin and eyes from harmful UV rays. Remember to drink plenty of water, snack on hydrating fruits like watermelon and cucumber, and consider electrolyte-enhanced beverages to replenish lost minerals.

Don’t forget to slather on sunscreen with a high SPF, wear protective clothing, and sport a stylish hat or shades to shield yourself from the sun’s rays. Be mindful of the time you spend outdoors, especially during peak sun hours, and take breaks in the shade to cool down and recharge.
