The post Tips for Hosting An Amazing Cup Match Camp appeared first on RG Magazines.
]]>And if you go to the game, you understand why. The banter, the rivalry, the fun. And most important the camps.
Cup Match camps or plots are designated spots scattered around the cricket club, this year in Somerset, that are purchased by plot holders year after year. These camps start at eight by eight and increase to triple the size, depending on how many people the holder wishes to entertain.
Many camp holders have had their designated spot for years, some even decades and look forward to hosting their friends and family during this special two day holiday.
If this is your first year hosting a camp and you’re a bit nervous like I was in my first year, I’ve got you covered.
My advice is to start your preparations in advance. It doesn’t matter if your camp is small or large, it will need to be kitted out unless you just want to sit in an empty box.
At a minimum, you will need carpet/artificial grass for the floor to make it more comfortable, mesh screening to have privacy of sorts as there will likely be a camp on either side of you, a tarpaulin that can be used as protection for the ceiling of the camp (especially if there is a camp on top of you because drinks can spill) and as shade when the sun starts to set (depending on what side of the field you are on), zip ties, rope, a large cooler, etc.
If your camp is on the larger side, you likely will need to build out a bar and install pallets to have at least two levels for your guests to be able to see the game unobstructed. I have found over the years that Gorham’s is the best place to get all your materials for your camp and the sales associates are very helpful.
While I’ve hosted my camp for a number of years, I reached out to people who’ve had camps for even longer to get the best advice to pass on to you.
Jarreau Hayward, Chairman of Building and Grounds at St. George’s Cricket Club says: “Good people equals good times. You want to be prepared for the weather. Think it through – it may rain, it may be sweltering. Have contingencies for both like fans and tarps. Build layers in the camp so that the seating goes far. A higher tier at the back, a lower tier in the front.”
He continued: “Organize food and drinks because it’s better to have too much than too little. Bring multiple coolers and segregate the food from the ice for the drinks. Build a bar that’s practical and functional and also doubles as storage.”
Mr Hayward’s final piece of advice is this: “Pace yourself. Cup Match is a marathon. Don’t go hard with the drinks. Stay cool and take a nap or two.”
Kristin White and her husband Dueane Dill host a camp in St George’s and their advice is to make your camp special.
“Our camp is a reflection of our love for the holiday – from displaying quotes about emancipation, to our photo board that has camp visitors take and display polaroids, to our ‘Sweet Freedom’ camp sign designed by artist Shanna Hollis. So of course you want to have a space that’s welcoming, but ultimately, your camp should feel special to YOU. Also, get the most comfortable chairs you can find.”
Bethea Pearman has co-hosted a camp in Somerset for 25 years with Kina and George Cann. Her advice is to host people who get along well.
“Make sure to have people who get along well together and do not mind sharing in the expenses along with the setting up and breaking down. Cup Match is quite costly when you have a camp. It can easily cost $250.00 and upwards per person.
“Also, rather than bringing a whole lot of food it is easier to buy food at Cup Match. It makes for less work. Take your chairs and coolers to your camp the evening before Cup Match so that you are not carrying so much stuff in on the day of the match. There is security on the grounds all night so your chairs, coolers and other belongings are pretty safe.”
Asked about must-haves for a fun camp, Ms Pearman said: “People who are friendly and get along well with each other. You also must have a bar with alcoholic drinks, water, other beverages, ice and the necessary utensils for a bar. A table for snacks, cups, plates and napkins etc. Comfortable chairs, trash bags, a couple of tables and plenty of snacks. Music, you must have some music. Basically anything that you would take on a picnic except a bathing suit.”
Michelle Wilkinson hosts a camp at both clubs and her advice is to surround yourself with people you like.
“Find reliable people to be in your camp that are willing to pay their portion. That’s the main thing. And people who can deal with for two days. People you know how they act when they drink.
“Other than the people in the camp, setting up the camp is a lot of work with the pallets, flooring, the privacy screens around the camp, the liquor and so on. It’s wonderful but it’s a lot of work and you’ll need help breaking down on the Friday night. Having a camp is wonderful but there’s a lot to do.”

]]>I spoke to Andrew Holmes, Brand Director of Gosling’s, for his thoughts on simple yet sensational summer cocktails, expertly curated to tantalize your taste buds and quench your thirst. He explained his thought process behind them.
“I wanted to create some cocktails that were easy to make at home with ingredients available island wide. Not everyone has the bar tools or the time to make elaborate cocktails that you may see at a bar or restaurant. These cocktails were developed to serve while entertaining or out on the boat.”
Whether you’re lounging by the pool, hosting a backyard barbecue, or simply seeking solace from the sweltering heat, these drinks have you covered. Prepare to elevate your summer sipping experience to new heights. So sit back, relax, and let us whisk you away on a cocktail adventure like no other. ]]>The post Summer Charcuterie Boards appeared first on RG Magazines.
]]>I spoke with Patrick James at Miles Market to get the best tips for creating boards for the summer season.
“Location is important. Is it going to be out on the boat, will you be on the beach? You have to be cautious of that. Focus on the environment and the people who are going to be there”, he said.
Once you’ve decided where you will serve your board and who will attend, it’s time to decide what to put on it. Mr James suggests going with a theme – Spanish cheeses, Italian cheeses, etc and to choose cheeses that will stand up in the heat.
Another tip is to provide options for guests who are lactose intolerant, those who are celiac and those who may not eat pork, as most salamis are made from pork.
“You probably want more cheddars, monterey jack, firmer cheeses that will stand up to the heat and some gouda. You can get the little logs of goat cheese and put some pesto on that, sundried tomato pesto. It adds a pop of colour to your board as well.
“You want some crackers and bread. Miles has a wide selection of gluten free crackers that go well. You don’t even know they are gluten free. You can use them along the board for anyone with celiac.”
He continued: “You can also add dried fruits, bags of assorted dried fruits, apricots, peaches, plums. They are great to keep in the house to snack on. You’ll want to add nuts, honey, spreads and figs. We’ve got some cool little jars of different condiments that you can use. You don’t have to open a big jar. You open it once and it’s done.”
As far as meats go, Mr James suggests adding them to the end of the board in case some of your guests don’t eat meat.
“Lots of meats that go on boards are pork. You can make your flowers and butterflies and go in between, but that’s where you need to know your guests. You can get packages of sliced cold cuts but if you are doing a small one, you can just go to the deli counter at Miles to get three different slices of salami.”
Now that we have everything to nibble on, it’s time to decide what to drink.
“For drinks, prosecco is very popular in the summer. That works great for a girls group and you can just use Italian cheese for your board. Asiago, parmesan, mozzarella balls tossed in basil and tomatoes or put them on a pick, things like that. And the harder cheese you can eat without crackers, which is a little less carbs for your bikini”, he said with a laugh.
Mr James continued: “You can do a cremant as opposed to a prosecco for a bubbly. It’s a French sparkling wine. Cremant is a great alternative to champagne and prosecco. They are smoother but still a brut. And of course, your favourite, rose or a sauvignon blanc or chardonnay.”
And if you’re still nervous about putting together a charcuterie board this summer, Mr James’ top tip is to either pick out three cheeses you will enjoy or go for something different that has a wow factor. He suggested trying triple creams instead of brie and buying anything with truffle.
Still have questions? Head over to Miles Market and ask for Mr James. He will happily give you excellent recommendations.

]]>The post How to do Cup Match Like A Bermudian appeared first on RG Magazines.
]]>It is THE song for Cup Match time in Bermuda and has been a favourite in Bermuda during the summer months for decades. And now finally, it’s almost time to sing the beloved tune.
Cup Match is less than two months away and I don’t know about you, but I am already excited for the four days of celebrations. As a St. George’s girl, I’ve had to deal with my team taking licks for over a decade now, but I still love Cup Match and everything that comes with it.
I won’t go into the full history, but long story short, Cup Match was introduced after the abolition of slavery in Bermuda. Men from Somerset and St. George’s met annually in a friendly rivalry to play a cricket match. In 1901, two major friendly societies were playing the match and agreed to play for a trophy. The following year, the trophy was produced, and Cup Match became official.
But Cup Match is much more than a cricket match. It’s the comradery between friends and family, the rivalries on the pitch, the delicious fried seafood, the overflowing drinks, the soca music, the banter, the atmosphere and the vibe. So how can you have the best Cup Match experience and enjoy it like a Bermudian?! Here are my tips:
This is pretty self explanatory. This year, the game is being played at Somerset Cricket Club. If you want the ultimate Cup Match Experience, you have to get yourself up to the field. It’s best to get there before the game starts so that you can experience the first ball. If you’re a newbie, go early on the first day and immerse yourself in the whole vibe of Cup Match. There is nothing like it! You will need to pay entry, which is usually $20, at the gate and you can stay all day. Grab a programme, read a bit about the history and learn about the players. Most importantly, pick a team and wear their colours (blue and blue baby!).
If you’re lucky, someone will invite you into their camp if you don’t have your own spot. Once you get in, you will be showered with drinks and even food. Being in a camp is the BEST way to watch the game, so if you’re lucky enough to be invited, enjoy the experience and be gracious. Thank your host and keep hopping because there’s nothing worse than a guest who was invited in, but won’t leave.
Cup Match is a party and at a party, we drink drinks. We all know Rum Swizzle is the drink of choice during the Cup Match festivities. One you get in a camp (see above), you will likely be handed a cup of cold swizzle. Drink it up, pace yourself and keep drinking it all day. Everyone has their own recipe, and everyone thinks their swizzle is the best. One of my favourite parts of Cup Match is going from camp to camp and trying everyone’s swizzle. It’s a must do. But don’t drink too much and end up being the subject of a reel by Mr Fotogenik! Sip on water in between.
You did not come to Cup Match to eat healthy! I’m just getting that out the way real quick. This is not the time to be on a diet AT ALL. The food on offer will likely be fried, so just go with it and indulge. My favourite thing to eat at the game is fried fish. There’s just something about the fried fish at Cup Match that just tastes better than everyday fried fish. There are a few quality stalls out there, but the best is Smuck’s. They’ve found a way to make well-seasoned, crispy, not dry fish. Oh and their sauce is amazing. Make sure you grab fish from there. Thank me later.
It wouldn’t be Cup Match without Crown and Anchor. In case you don’t know (there are some who don’t!), the game is a simple dice game, played between the player and the banker. The player places a bet on one or more symbols. The banker then throws the dice and if there is a bet on any symbol which comes up on the dice, the banker pays the player. It’s easy, it’s fun and it’s risky. Make sure you don’t put down more than you can risk losing!
Bonus:
Make sure you wear sunscreen and bring a hat. August in Bermuda is hot, hot, hot and getting sunburnt at Cup Match is no joke (ask me how I know!). And hydrate throughout the day. There are air conditioned porta potties at the grounds and regularly cleaned bathrooms so you won’t have to worry about finding an acceptable bathroom.
These are my top tips to having THE BEST Cup Match in Bermuda. What do you enjoy the most about Cup Match?! Let me know in the comments.

]]>The post Carnival Magic appeared first on RG Magazines.
]]>Veteran carnival lover Global Carnivalist has been playing mas since she was a child and almost a decade ago, turned her experience into a blog to help fellow carnival lovers have the best experiences. On her blog, Globey, her nickname from her followers, shares the best tips, tricks and strategies to a seamless carnival experience.
We asked her for her best tips to getting ready for Carnival in Bermuda like a pro.
What’s your top tip for someone doing carnival for the first time?
Go with an open mind and work on your stamina. The road is long and hot and you are going to meet a lot of dynamic personalities and people.
What are your must haves for getting ready?
Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen – the sun exposure is no joke. Additionally, a really good high performance primer and makeup foundation so I stay looking great for most of the day
How soon should revellers start getting ready for the road?
if we’re talking about fitness, in general, about four months. If we’re talking about makeup and getting dressed, it usually takes me about three hours from start to finish to do my makeup, oil my body, apply sunscreen and get my costume on. So give yourself at least two hours.
Any tips for the last minute Lucy’s?
Try to be as prepared as possible for any costume mishaps, like if you got your costume late and it might not necessarily be your size order swimwear in a similar hue to wear in case there are sizing issues.
What are your three to five must haves for the road
A battery pack for my phone, lipstick, a mini perfume, to refresh, sunscreen and makeup blotter sheets or a makeup brush.
Are there any getting ready strategies that should be obvious but maybe aren’t?
If you wear fishnet stockings, put on socks first then stockings. This will prevent your toes from going through the net and will be more comfortable, also use gel insoles to protect your feet. I would also recommend going a half size up in sneakers/flat boots to give your toes room.
Additionally, always carry a needle and thread that matches the color of your costume in case you need to make any adjustments

]]>The post It’s Carnival: A comprehensive guide to Carnival in Bermuda appeared first on RG Magazines.
]]>Welcome to the ultimate guide to experiencing the vibrant and electrifying carnival celebrations in the stunning island paradise of Bermuda! Prepare to be dazzled as I unveil the secrets to immersing yourself in the colourful festivities, rich culture, and infectious energy of Bermuda’s carnival.
To kick things off, I spoke with Keidric Smith, an executive director of Carnival in Bermuda about what locals and tourists alike can expect over this high energy weekend.
Asked what he would say to encourage someone who’s never been to Carnival In Bermuda to attend, Mr Smith said: “This is an experience like no other. The atmosphere exudes a sense of immense freedom, allowing you to unwind, be yourself, and indulge in community fun that can only be found at a carnival event. From the music and entertainers to the cuisine, the diverse cultural experience brings utmost pleasure that you wouldn’t want to miss.”
And while most of us just show up for the parties and events, the behind the scenes preparation is a full undertaking that we know nothing about.
“An event of this magnitude requires nine to 12 months of planning”, he said.
“This includes strategic planning sessions, site visits with various vendors, marketing and promotions, collaborating with other event promoters, volunteer management, and numerous other meetings.”
As far as the components of a successful carnival, Mr Smith said: “A passionate experienced planning team, great music, the hottest DJ’s and entertainers, pure party vibes and of course the support of the revelers, masqueraders,- the community.”
Asked about his favourite event over the carnival weekend, he said: J’ouvert is by far my favourite event. The amount of effort and attention to detail put into planning it is impressive. The atmosphere is truly exhilarating and contagious.
“All the water, paint, and powder are a fun way to bring out your inner child and get messy, leaving you covered in color and wearing the party experience. Being able to connect with the community and feel the energy as they let loose in a safe environment is an incredibly liberating experience.”
This year, revellers can expect a full schedule of events from Thursday through to Revel De Road on Monday. Here’s a look at at the events:
Thursday:
To kick things off for the weekend is Evolve. This classy but fun event really starts off the carnival weekend on a great note. This year’s theme is Colours of Bermuda and attendees can expect top tier Bermudian and International DJs along with an all-inclusive experience.
Army Fete is a new entry this year by COA at Pier 6 from 10pm to 3am. It features Bermudian and international DJs, party favours, entry shots and bottle service options with four different tiers.
Friday:
Oasis Sunrise returns to Barr’s Bay Park from 5am to 11am with an open bar, party favours and unlimited vibes. Limited Private Cabanas are also available and include a private section, 10 tickets, complimentary breakfast, three bottles of liquor, endless Mimosas and an open bar.
One of my favourite events on the Bermuda party calendar is Flag Invasion, which is usually held around Bermuda Day. This year, founder and host DJ Rusty G has moved Flag Invasion to the Friday on Carnival In Bermuda. Flag Invasion is drink inclusive and will be held at Fort St Catherine with Bermudian and International entertainment. .
JC Productions is hosting Classic Old School Fete in Finsbury Garden from 9pm to 3am and promises to take revellers on a musical journey back in time to the days of Byron Lee, Tiger Bay soca shows and Clay House. Classic Old School Fete includes food and a complimentary drink on arrival.
We Love Dancehall will be held under the big tent at National Sports Centre featuring the world’s biggest dancehall sound systems from 9pm to 3am.
Saturday:

Patrons are encouraged to wear casual tropical chic attire with comfortable shoes. Unlimited swizzle is included in the general admission ticket and VIP guests will enjoy an all-inclusive premium bar, food, preferred parking and a VIP entrance.
Raft Up is one of the most anticipated events of the weekend and this year will be no different. It will be held at Shelly Bay from 12 noon to 6pm with a barge, top DJs, food vendors, a cash bar and more.
Soca In The City features The Queen of Bacchanal Destra Garcia and this year’s Road March winner for Trinidad Carnival, Mical Teja. This new event will take place in BAA car park and is hosted by Envy Productions.
Party People will be hosting Euphoria, a drinks inclusive event at Chaplin Bay Car Park. Dress code is beach chic and men must wear collared shirts. Entertainment includes DJ Private Ryan, Ovadose, Tony X, DJ Rusty G, DJ Mystro and Jim Brown. Euphoria starts at 10pm and goes until 3am.
Sunday:
Wetta promises revellers sun, soca, bacchanal and water at Snorkel Park from 9am to 2pm at this all-inclusive fete. Attendees are encouraged to wear swimwear as this is a true wet fete with a variety of food options, a premium bar experience and transportation options from Hamilton to Dockyard.
Another event that’s a must on my list is Glow, Bermuda’s first all-inclusive day fete. It’s the event for the grown and sexy held at Queen Elizabeth Park. This year’s theme is strictly white with a touch of pink and will feature Bermudian and international entertainment with premium bars and food options.
Pure has been a staple of Carnival In Bermuda since its inception and has grown tremendously over the years. It is the only event that has brought the biggest names in Soca and Dancehall consistently including Machel Montano, Desta, Shensea and Mr Killa. This year, patrons can look forward to Dancehall Sensation Charlie Black and Energy King Asa Banton alongside Kevin Crown, DJ AValanche, DJ Rusty G, Mista Genius and DJ Fury.
JAM J’ouvert offers revellers a chance to “free up” with paint, powder and water at Bernard’s Park from 3am to 9am. JAM J’ouvert is all-inclusive and each package includes a t-shirt, a bag and a cup.
Revel De Road formerly known as the Parade of Bands, is a procession of dancing masqueraders that will dazzle spectators with their vibrant colours, dazzling costumes and infectious energy. It takes place on Carnival Monday and in order to participate, you must be registered with this year’s only band, Nova Mas.

But just because a restaurant has outdoor dining doesn’t mean it’s a good vibe. In this roundup, I’m sharing my ten favorite places to grab a meal outside. My criteria includes views, shade from the sun and of course, the food. Without further ado, here are my top ten restaurants for alfresco dining this summer.
1609 AT HAMILTON PRINCESS
So technically this isn’t alfresco as the restaurant is enclosed in glass but it might as well be! 1609 gets my vote as one of my top restaurants for alfresco dining simply because you are basically sitting above the water in a serene atmosphere.
The cocktail list is tequila and mezcal focused while the food is fresh Mexican with guacamole, ceviches, a variety of tacos and freshly grilled meats available. 1609 is pretty perfect for summer alfresco dining. Hot tip: book a table 30 mins before sunset to experience the magic.
RUSTICO
Delicious Italian on a covered patio? Yes please! Rustico is one of those classic Bermuda restaurants with great service and great food to match. The patio is fabulous, especially now that it’s completely covered with a weather-proof tent.
Rustico is famous for its incredible thin crust pizzas, fresh seafood and many other Italian classics. The wine list is extensive and their house made desserts are to die for. Hot tip: It can get a bit warm on the patio during the day, so book a table in the evening.
WAHOO’S BISTRO
If you want amazing, fresh seafood in a truly Bermudian environment, Wahoo’s is the place to go. The majority of the restaurant is open air and there’s a deck with a retractable roof in case the weather isn’t that great.
Some of my faovurite days have been spent enjoying lunch or dinner here. Whatever you do, order the fresh catch of the day, which will be listed on the blackboard. You can’t go wrong with any of the options, but if you see Red Hind or Rockfish Ribs, either one of those for a sublime meal. Hot tip: If you aren’t super hungry, order a single Wahoo Taco with a glass of their incredible Rum Swizzle.
AURORA AT NEWSTEAD
An extensive seafood menu and gorgeous view of Hamilton? That’s exactly what you get when you dine at Aurora. The menu is fantastic and the execution is even better. Plus, the patio is large so whether you come with a large or small group, you’ll have a great view. And because it’s right above the water, the breeze is nice and there are umbrellas to help with the sun. Hot tip: Go for a lazy lunch, order a bottle of rose and enjoy the afternoon!
SEA BREEZE AT THE LIDO COMPLEX
With gorgeous views of the South Shore, Sea Breeze is a must do for this list. Whether you go for a long lunch or on the weekend for live entertainment, this dining spot is exactly what comes to mind when I hear the words alfresco dining.
Sea Breeze is known for its extensive sushi and tapas menu, but there’s also a large pizza menu, bar snacks, impressive cocktail list and wine menu. It’s a great spot for weekend dining or whenever you have a lot of time. Hot tip: Book a table on a Friday night to enjoy some of Bermuda’s best live music.
HUCKLEBERRY AT ROSEDON
If you’re looking for classic alfresco garden vibes, Huckleberry is the place for you. With excellent menus for brunch, lunch, dinner and happy hour, you can quite literally dine alfresco here any time of the day.
As Bermuda’s only Relais + Chateau property, you will experience exemplary dining and service to match. The little touches here make a big difference and the urban oasis setting adds to the wonderful experience. Hot tip: Book a table on the covered porch for the best experience.
PINK BEACH CLUB AT THE LOREN
If you want to dine with the sound of the ocean crashing, Pink Beach Club is for you. The restaurant is covered but is open air so you don’t have to worry about the sun beaming in your face and you still get the alfresco experience.
The food here is always good (tacos are a fave) as are the drinks. I highly recommend coming on a day when you aren’t in a rush as Pink Beach Club is definitely a place for a relaxed meal. Hot tip: Ask for a table on the outer edge to truly experience the waves crashing.
SUL VERDE AT ROSEWOOD BERMUDA
As I mentioned above, great Italian food and alfresco dining go hand in hand. And while Sul Verde is Italian food, the experience here is very different from the alfresco experience at Rustico. Sul Verde overlooks Tucker’s Point Golf Course and you get ocean views from the elevated restaurant.
The wraparound porch is large which means you usually get a seat. It’s completely covered and there are ceiling fans to keep you cool. The menu has pizza, pasta, sandwiches, fresh seafood and much more. There’s also a great cocktail and wine list. Hot tip: Order from the pizz menu and get a bottle of rosé. Sit for hours enjoying your fabulous life.
BREEZE’S AT CAMBRIDGE BEACHES
Breeze’s is one of the restaurants that makes you feel like you are on vacation. It’s steps away from the beach and truly has that beach bar vibe. It’s chic but still very casual and like many others on the list, is a great place to sit and laze while eating and drinking.
The menu has sandwiches, salads, burgers, pastas, catch of the day and much more depending on if you come for lunch or dinner. There’s also a large vegetarian offering for those who don’t eat meat. Hot tip: You can arrive by boat, anchor and walk right up.
THE WHARF
If you haven’t caught on by now, my favourite alfresco dining tends to be waterside. The Wharf offers one of the best waterside dining options in Bermuda right next to St. George’s Harbour. There are two main outdoor dining spaces – on the porch attached to the restaurant and then the entire wharf next to the harbour with umbrellas for covering.
The Wharf offers a very large menu with a separate sushi and pizza menu. I typically will order sushi and pizza to share with whoever I’m dining with along with a glass of rosé. The Wharf is great for people watching as the area is bustling when cruise ships are on island. Hot tip: Ask for a table right next to the water and feed the fish your leftovers.
There you have it, my fellow food enthusiasts – the top ten restaurants in Bermuda for alfresco dining. No matter which one you choose, you’re in for a great culinary experience that will leave you craving more. Happy dining!

From electrifying entertainment to dazzling cultural celebrations, Bermuda has something for everyone. Allow us to present the best of the best for Bermuda’s summer events, promising unforgettable experiences that will leave you enchanted and longing for more. Here are the top ten events happening in Bermuda this summer in no particular order that you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
CUP MATCH CLASSIC
Cup Match is truly Bermuda at its best and easily the most entertaining weekend on the calendar. Cup Match – a celebration of emancipation – is a two-day cricket match held on the last Thursday and Friday of July or the first Thursday and Friday in August. This beloved Bermudian tradition brings the island to life with passionate fans, live music, plenty libations and delicious food. This year, the game will be held at St. George’ Cricket Club on August 3rd and 4th and entry is $20 per day. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere and cheer for your favourite team.
BERMUDA TRIPLE CROWN BILLFISH CHAMPIONSHIP
Fishing enthusiasts, this one’s for you! The Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship is a thrilling tournament held from July to August, attracting anglers from around the world. Watch as skilled fishermen compete to catch the biggest billfish and experience the excitement firsthand. Here are the key dates:
NON-MARINERS RACE
While this event does happen during the Cup Match weekend, it’s completely separate. The Non-Mariners race features unique, homemade boats participating in a fun race on the water. The “boats” rarely float, which adds to the humour of the non-race. There will be colourful costumes, creative boat designs and lots of fun. Non-Mariners is held the Sunday of Cup Match weekend (August 6 this year) at Mangrove Bay. The best way to attend is by boat.
BERMUDA SANDCASTLE COMPETITION
Held at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the Bermuda Sandcastle Competition features gorgeous creations by masterful sculptors. The event will be held on September 2 this year at Horseshoe Bay Beach. You can either get in on the action and enter or enjoy the beautiful intricate designs. The Bermuda Sandcastle Competition is great fun for the whole family.
HARBOUR NIGHTS
Family fun is on offer every single Wednesday in the City of Hamilton thanks to Harbour Nights. The popular street festival is held from 7pm to 10pm weekly throughout the summer and showcases local dancers, musicians, artisans, food vendors, a kids zone and much more. Harbour NIghts gives residents and visitors the opportunity to sample local delicacies, purchase Bermudian crafts, enjoy traditional dancing and much more.
DESTINATION DOCKYARD
Head west this summer for Destination Dockyard with four monthly events happening during the season on the North Lawn. Destination Dockyard is a fun-filled event for the whole family featuring an array of local vendors, artists, and talented entertainers. The perfect way to spend a mid-week, family evening. The children can enjoy fun castles and a bite to eat, while the adults bask in the local entertainment and shopping. The remaining dates for Destination Dockyard are July 20 and August 24 for the “big bang” finale.
EASTERN COUNTY CRICKET GAMES
Eastern County Cricket is similar to Cup Match but at the same time, very different. The Eastern County Cricket Association (ECCA) comprises four county cricket clubs – Flatts Victoria (FVCC), Cleveland (CCCC), Bailey’s Bay (BBCC) and St. David’s (SDCCC). There are three games – the first held two weeks before Cup Match, the second game two weeks after Cup Match and the last game is two weeks after the second. Eastern County has been played since 1904 and is played at Lords at SDCCC or Sea Breeze Oval at BBCC on a year’s schedule. The atmosphere is vibrant and fun with great local food, Crown and Anchor and endless entertainment.
ST. GEORGE’S SEAFOOD FESTIVAL
This event was launched last summer and it was insanely successful! Popular vendors quickly ran out of fresh seafood and the entertainment was top notch. The event is held on Ordnance Island in St. George’s and celebrates Bermuda’s rich seafood culture. From fresh fried fish to shrimp to mussel pies to conch fritters, you’ll find it all here at this fantastic event. There will also be top notch Bermudian singers and DJs, bars serving up great cocktails and so much more. St. George’s Seafood Festival will be held on September 16 from 12 noon to 7pm.
BACCHANAL RUN
If you missed Carnival in Bermuda in June, Bacchanal Run delivers the J’ouvert vibes for a fraction of the cost. Bacchanal Run is organized by Party People and is one of the best parties over the Cup Match weekend. Hundreds of revellers head to Bernard Park for a warm up and then follow the big music truck around Pembroke for a lively, colourful party on the road with paint, powder and sprays of water. The party loops back to Bernard Park for more enjoyment with Bermuda;s top DJs and entertainers. Bacchanal Run will be held on August 5.
BERMUDA PRIDE HOMECOMING
Bermuda celebrates Pride in August and Bermuda Pride will host a number of events this year including a takeover of Harbour Nights, Open Mic Night, Pride Prom, Pride Parade and Drag Brunch. This year’s events are focused on “homecoming” and the committee invites those in the LGBTQ+ community who have left the island to return home to celebrate how far Bermuda has come and to recognize how much more work there is to do. The events will be held from August 23 to 27 in the City of Hamilton. For more info, visit www.pride.bm.
And there you have it, ten fantastic events happening in Bermuda this summer. From cultural celebrations to sporting events and food festivals, there’s something for everyone. Add these events to your calendar and enjoy the rest of the summer.
