Christopher Carlson, director of hospitality at the Loren at Pink Beach, created this twist on a rum and coke, the ubiquitous ‘rock & roll drink’. Christopher worked with the legendary record producer Robert Stigwood, longtime resident in Bermuda on the Wreck Hill estate. His bar always included Goslings, at the ready for such visiting rockers as Eric Clapton and the Bee Gees. No recording studio in New York would have been without such supply…that and a good amount of limes [usually found having rolled under the mixing board ]. ” I believe Bermudians can easily embrace this updated version of the cocktail, especially considering how Goslings rum is part of the fabric of Bermuda’s history.”

Stir it up: Gregory Simmons, bartender at The Loren at Pink Beach, shows off his skills behind the bar making The Wreck Hill Rum & Coke

The Wreck Hill Rhum & Coke

Ingredients

-3 ounces Fever Tree Cola or Coke-Cola

-1 ounce Gosling’s Aged Family Rum

-1/2 ounce Gin

– 2 dashes bitters

-1/4 lime [preferably Key lime]

– Dash of club soda

Directions

Combine ingredients, mix and enjoy!

Local bartender Ryan Gibbons, from Barracuda Grill, created this cocktail in tribute to Bermudian music heritage, the Gombeys and our island culture. It took quite a bit of trial and error to get the flavors exactly right, he admits. As peach was coming into season, he paired that with the delicate taste of Gosling’s Gold Seal Rum. The drink’s sweetness comes from mango puree, brought to life with a pop of lime, dash of honeyed apricot and smoked hickory bitters.

4) Strain cocktail into a short tumbler glass filled with ice.

Bermuda’s newest boutique hotel, The Loren, is planning its biggest event of the year, New Year’s Eve. The party was announced at the end of November with Bermuda favourites, The Big Chill, as headliners. Organisers are hoping to deliver an unforgettable experience that local revellers will thoroughly enjoy.

The hotel is offering 3 ticket tiers for the night to suit party goers on all budgets. The $150 ticket includes access to The Pink Beach Club from 9pm until 1am and the ticket price includes open bar, hors d’oeuvres and a champagne hour. If you are after a VIP experience, the $200 ticket affords you the same as the $150 ticket does with the addition of special access to the VIP Marée bar, allowing you to escape for a more intimate celebration. For those wishing to start the night with a gourmet New Year’s dinner, the $300 package includes a three-course meal with wine pairings in the Loren’s premier restaurant Maree; after which you can continue the celebrations at The Pink Beach Club with an open bar, late night hors d’oeuvres and champagne.

The NYE countdown and dance floor with The Big Chill Band followed by a local DJ will take place at The Pink Beach Club overlooking the ocean. Tony Brannon and Kassie of The Big Chill said, “We are delighted to celebrate the New Year at The Loren. The setting is stunning and we promise a magical night.”

The Loren hotel is also offering a local special for overnight stays during the New Year period.

Anna Gaffney, General Manager of The Loren said, “A lot of thought and planning has gone into this event, we really wanted to create something that Bermuda’s never seen before. One of the more unusual aspects of the night is that we will have a Notary on hand to sign any New Year’s declarations that people would like to make. It’s something fun and different which we hope everyone will enjoy. After we have rung in the New Year, guests can release sky lanterns into the Sky from the disc along with their wishes for year to come.”

The Pink Beach Club will be transformed for the night with lavish decorations, a bubbles bar and New Year’s goddesses by TK Hair. The Loren, known for their knack for curation, has designed every detail of the night around the theme of the New Year. Executive Chef Tim Sullivan said, “Traditions vary from culture to culture but many New Year’s celebrations surround eating foods that are believed to bring good luck. The hors d’oeuvres that we plan to serve on the night, as well as the New Year’s dinner that we are offering, will feature these luck-bringing, global delicacies.”

Manager Anna Gaffney commented “When we first opened earlier this year, the Loren was well poised to take advantage of the buzz brought about by the America’s Cup. Since then we have had a lot of feedback from locals about our offerings and what works and what doesn’t.  We have listened and tweaked our products and service accordingly. Our aim is to deliver a hospitality product that is desired and different. We really encourage everyone to come experience The Loren during the holidays. In addition to our New Year’s Eve party we are offering hotel stay packages and a Christmas brunch at The Pink Beach Club that is kid-friendly and reasonably priced ($65 for adults and $35 for children + gratuities).”
